Boat builders of Sangeang,
Sumbawa, Indonesia
Just off the north east tip of Sumbawa is the island of Sangeang,
the home of the Gunung Api (fire mountain), which erupted in
1983. The villagers, originally from the Bugi area of Sulawesi,
were all evacuated and relocated on the mainland. They are still
building traditional Bugis Schooner and the beach is their shipyard.
The ‘pinisi’ boats are built using centuries-old
designs and techniques: wood planks and plugs. The average size
is about 100ft.
