Jim and Vicki go SOLO in the Bay of
Islands
Late November/early December. Dylan took a trip to see his
family and friends and his beloved country, South Africa. Vicki
found a delightful distraction: shopping! Hitching a ride into
Paihia, she haunted the souvenir shops for multiple miscellaneous
marvelous mini-gifts, all to be sent off to friends and relatives
for Christmas, having the best time doing it!
When the weather looked like it might be improving we (Jim
and Vicki) took Firebird for a cruise in the Bay of Islands.
There are some very scenic spots, but we could not help comparing
the area to the Virgin Islands, which rated far better, especially
in terms of weather.
Then we ventured on up to Whangaroa Harbour. Definitely a stunning
place with high cliffs and many coves. A perfect place to cool
out – literally!
We returned to Opua to a frenzy of emotion. Dylan returned
on a Sunday and the next day we learned that our fine friend
Frank Hobble had passed away on December 20. He had only left
us three weeks before, to return to his family in Oregon in
time for the Christmas holidays. We were and have remained deeply
saddened by his departure. He loved the sea and sailing more
than any of us and was an intrepid and independent adventurer.
He was a devoted father and husband and to us he was a true
friend, giving us his never-ending generosity and helping in
many ways. Frank will always be with us in spirit!
